FAQs

How accurate is the instant estimate?

It's a starting range based on format, character count, name-likeness, and visual substitution patterns. Real market value depends on comparable sales, current demand, and who's actively looking. Our human appraisal (free, within one business day) is significantly more precise.

What drives a plate's value?

In order of impact: (1) pattern - short dateless are worth multiples of longer plates; (2) readability - plates that cleanly spell a name or word; (3) rarity - uncommon three-letter combinations; (4) name popularity - OLIVER plates trade more than niche names; (5) substitutions - subtle (3=E) is premium, heavy (B055 for BOSS) is lower; (6) year of release.

How does House of Plates sell a plate?

We share discreetly with relevant buyers across our 40+ dealer network and private client list - no bargain listings on Marketplace or eBay. Funds are held in our client account before any DVLA transfer begins. Cleared funds are released to you on completion of assignment. Typical commission: 10-15%.

How long does it take to sell?

Short premium plates often sell within 2-4 weeks. Longer or niche plates can take 2-6 months. We never undersell - if a realistic offer doesn't land in a reasonable window, we tell you honestly so you can relist elsewhere or hold.

Can I sell a plate I don't have on a certificate?

Yes - if it's still on a vehicle, we'll guide you through retention (V317) so it's transferrable. Retention is free for registrations no longer being used on a vehicle. The DVLA admin fee (£80) applies when a new keeper assigns it later.
