FAQ
Common questions
What's the difference between prefix and suffix plates?
Prefix plates (1983–2001) start with a letter indicating the year — A for 1983, B for 1984, up to Y for 2001. Suffix plates (1963–1982) put the year letter at the end. Both formats make the age of the vehicle visible.
Can I put a prefix plate on a car older than its year?
No. DVLA only permits a dated plate to be displayed on a vehicle first registered in the same year or later. For example, an L-prefix plate (1993) cannot go on a 1990 vehicle.
