FAQ
Common questions
What is a current-style number plate?
Current-style plates have been issued since September 2001 in the format AB12 CDE. The two digits in the middle are the age identifier — e.g. 24 means March 2024, 74 means September 2024.
What do the numbers in the middle mean?
They encode the half-year of issue. Codes 02–24 represent the March release of 2002–2024. Codes 52–74 represent the September release of those years. So a 56 plate was issued in September 2006.
Can I put a newer plate on an older car?
No. DVLA rules prevent making a vehicle appear newer than it is. A 2006 plate cannot be displayed on a 2003 car, but it can go on a 2006, 2010 or any later vehicle.
